Q: What does SDS mean?
A: SDS stands for "Solo, Duet, and Small Group".
Q: Can we use choreography from a Just For Kix dance?
A: You cannot use an entire routine, but as with most individual choreography, it is acceptable to utilize 2–3 eight counts of choreography.
Q: My dancer's cousin is not a Just For Kix dancer; can she be part of the duet?
A: No, the competition is open to Just For Kix dancers only.
Q: What do the divisions Classic, Select, and Elite mean?
A: The Classic level is meant for beginner/intermediate dancers, Select level for intermediate dancers, and Elite level for advanced dancers. In the event of low participation, divisions may be combined to allow for adequately sized divisions.
Q: How is the judging criteria different from the TWD Competition?
A: SDS judging is based on technique, execution, choreography, and overall effect. Spacing and formations are not applicable, but use of the floor and effectiveness will be evaluated.
Learn more about judging here.
Q: Can my dancer wear their Just For Kix class costume?
A: Absolutely. Costuming is a small portion of the judging, and if it matches the style of the routine, that is just fine.
Q: We originally registered as a duet and now decided to compete as a small group. Can we change our division?
A: Please call the Home Office to check on the possibility of any changes at 218-829-7107, Monday–Friday, 10:00am–4:30pm.
Q: Can we hire an outside choreographer?
A: Yes. We want the dancer to be active in the choreography process, but you are welcome to use any means for choreography.
Q: Is there a time limit for solos, duets, and small groups?
A: Each routine must stay within the designated time limit for its division. Specific time limits will be provided prior to the event.
Q: Are props allowed?
A: Small, hand-held props may be allowed if they are safe, quick to set, and do not interfere with the event flow. Large or elaborate props are not permitted.
Q: Can dancers compete in more than one SDS routine?
A: Yes, dancers may compete in multiple SDS routines as long as each routine meets eligibility requirements.
Q: What styles of dance are allowed?
A: Jazz, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, pom, and kick styles are all welcome, as long as the choreography is age-appropriate.
Q: Will scores and feedback be provided?
A: Yes. Judges’ scores and written feedback will be available following the event to help dancers continue to grow and improve.
Q: What happens if participation numbers are low in a division?
A: Divisions may be combined to ensure a fair and competitive experience for all participants.
