There are certain dance apparel items that just don't look right outside the studio or off the stage. Take, for instance, your sequined biketard. You'd get some second looks if you donned that anywhere outside of a performance or dress rehearsal. However, if you love to dance -- and you love the clothes that come with it -- there are plenty of pieces that are versatile, like dance bra tops. As a result, you can wear them almost anytime and anywhere, even when you're not rehearsing or preparing for a big performance.
In addition, there's dance clothing you can wear from top to bottom -- think graphic dance t-shirt and jazz pants -- as well as certain items that you can simply incorporate into your regular everyday wardrobe, such as dance bra tops. To help you get the most from you dance wardrobe and the money you've invested in it, here's a look at a few pieces you can wear beyond the dance studio:
Dance bra tops
Dance bra tops are one of those items that are comfortable and functional whether you're dancing, studying or shopping. They provide the support you need and can be a great item for layering your outfits when you're not at dance. For instance, you can wear dance bra tops under a camisole or tank top during the summer. You can also wear them under a dance sweatshirt or hoodie during colder weather. The options are truly endless.
Leotards
Leotards are one of those pieces that simply scream "dance!" But the good news is that they look great in your everyday life too. You can wear one with a cute pair of jeans or even a suit, as long as the leotard has sleeves. You can also pair a leotard with wide-legged trousers, which can balance out the more snug-fitting top. With all the different colors that today's leotards come in, you'll have plenty of choices that can best complement your look.
Graphic t-shirts
Dance t-shirts are another great piece that are supremely versatile. They're comfortable to wear in the studio, enabling you to move with ease, while still looking great. At the same time, you can wear them to the gym, to school or while you're hanging out with your friends at home. When you have one on, you'll look more stylish than a plain t-shirt, plus many of them have messages which broadcast your love of dance to the world.
Dance sweatshirts
Most of the time, you're only going to wear your dance sweatshirts on your way to the studio and while you're warming up. So it makes sense for you to get more wear out of them and dress in them even when you're not dancing. For instance, most dance sweatshirts are the perfect choice for days when you're traveling, lounging, or going out to run errands.
Leggings
Besides the leotard, perhaps one of the most versatile pieces in every dancer's wardrobe is the legging. As long as they're not boldly colored and super shiny, you can wear them with almost anything. For instance, the tight leggings are a great contrast to an oversized, loose-fitting top or cardigan sweater, which will balance out the look. You can also wear a tunic top with leggings, as well as a tunic t-shirt. Just keep in mind that leggings are not pants -- despite how much you want them to be -- shouldn't be worn as a substitute.
If you are interested in getting more from your dance wardrobe and investing in versatile items, then go for more neutral colors and fabrics when shopping. For instance, a lot of sequins and sparkle might feel uncomfortable to wear on your average day at work, school or the mall. However, if you have dance clothing in neutral colors -- think pink, black, white, gray and beige -- and fabrics, then it's going to make more sense to wear them outside the studio.
That said, when it comes to certain items, you should never wear them anywhere but when you're dancing, even if the colors and style are neutral. For instance, your dance shoes should only be worn when you're rehearsing or performing. If you wear them on the street, you risk them getting scratches and scuffs that make them look bad. Not only that, but they'll get worn out more quickly, which means you're going to have to replace them sooner. This will cost you more money in the long run.
In addition, other items that shouldn't be worn outside the dance studio or off the stage include your dance costume, tights, and performance dresses. Again, when you wear them outside of dance, you risk damaging the pieces, which you will eventually have to replace. It's best to keep some items separate from your regular wardrobe and only wear them when you're planning to practice or perform.
