Dance Leotard Buying Guide

When it comes to dance leotards, there are a lot of choices out there in the dance world -- from the classics to strap backs and halters. So the question is: Where do you begin?

Your first step should be checking with your dance teacher or studio regarding any rules or guidelines for leotards. Some teachers are more casual and have few restrictions, while others want you in a certain style or color -- even in class. It's best to check with your teacher first so you don't purchase a dance leotard that you can't wear.

Once that's done, you're ready to shop! Here are some tips for finding high quality dance leotards:

The Cut

dance leotards

When it comes to the cut of leotards, there are countless styles to choose from. Think long-sleeve, cap-sleeve, tank, camisole, biketard, halter, boat-neck, turtle-neck, and off-the-shoulder. The cut you ultimately choose is really up to you in terms of what you feel best in. However, do look for leotards made using side, front and back darts. This will provide a more secure, yet flexible fit.

Also, when shopping for leotards, you need to be mindful of size charts. These can be helpful because you might be a size 'small' typically, but a 'medium' in a dance leotard. Different brands and different styles can run slightly smaller. So do go up a size if you need to in order to feel comfortable.

The best, high quality leotards will fit like a second skin. There shouldn't be any loose fabric or bunching across your shoulders, stomach, hips or bottom. Likewise, it shouldn't be so tight that you feel constricted. Straps shouldn't be loose and falling down, nor should they be digging into your skin. In addition, they shouldn't give you wedgies when you're moving about or pull uncomfortably in any area. These are all signs of a low quality leotard.

Good leotards will stretch and move with you. And you won't have to be constantly adjusting them as you move through dance class. In fact, you won't have to think much about them when you're dancing at all.

If you're taller, look for those cuts that come in X-Long sizes so they're comfortable on your longer torso. If you're a larger-chested dancer, make sure you purchase styles that have ample support in the form of a lining, or a leotard that comes with a built-in bra. If you choose a more modest style leotard, you can also wear a regular or sports bra under your leotard. The Details

There are plain and simple leotards, as well as those with plenty of embellishments and details, such as lace and jewels. While the latter are fun for dance class, keep in mind that they can distract from a clean line, if that's the look you're after.

Another detail to be mindful of is the fabric you choose. For instance, fabrics like Lycra and Nylon/Spandex are popular for a reason. Both fabrics are extremely stretchy, providing a fitted look with plenty of flexibility. There are certainly other fabrics to choose from, such as velvet and metallics, both of which offer a more dramatic style. However, metallic fabrics don't have as much give in them, which means you'll feel more constricted, especially if you have broader shoulders. Likewise, velvets look beautiful, but you might also get hot and sweaty a lot faster when wearing a dance leotard made of this fabric.

The Color

When you think of a dance leotard, most minds automatically go to pink. And, after all these years, pink is still a popular color choice, especially among younger dancers. Not only is it a classic look, but it also complements any skin tone, so looks good on every dancer.

That said, if pink's not your thing, then you're in luck. Today's leotards offer a host of different colors to choose from, from flaming red to midnight blue. There are also patterned leotard, which can make a big statement on performance nights.

The Top Brands

Leotards look simple. But in reality, they're the cornerstone of any dancer's toolkit. While the first aspect you might notice is how a particular leotard looks, it's more important to evaluate it for quality, too. That way, you can rest assured that you'll look great in class and during performances, but also feel comfortable and secure. If you don't, it could undermine how well your perform.

With that in mind, what are some of the top brands to consider? Here's a look:

  • Capezio: For the luxury fabrics and technology that every dancer needs.
  • Gia Mia: From ballet cut to princess seams, you can look beautiful on budget in this brand.
  • Alexandra: Brings the latest fashions into the world of dance.

  • Eurotard: Internationally recognized brand known for quality products, soft fabrics, rich colors, and strong materials.
