How To Be That Dancer Audiences Can't Stop Watching

05/16/2018

You want more than to be just a good dancer in the best dance shoes. You want to be the kind of dancer people can't take their eyes off of. How do you get there? Obviously, there's tons of hard work at play. Dancers who are amazing to watch are those who never say "no" to practice. In their books, there are no excuses. They know if they don't work rigorously and practice often, sacrificing a lot along the way, they're not going to be able to reach the highest level of dance.

But beyond that, what else can you do to enhance your dance technique and aesthetics? Here are some tips to keep in mind.

Evaluate yourself.

One of the best ways to improve your dance moves is to analyze yourself. To do that, ask a friend or fellow dancer to video you while you're dancing. It's always hard to watch yourself, but push past the feelings of awkwardness. When you do, you can look at yourself, your technique and areas that need improvement. It's hard to see all that in the mirror when you're dancing.

Not only that, but having videos of yourself is also an easier way to keep tabs on progress. You can watch yourself from one week to the next and visually evaluate where you're improving and the spots that still need some work.

Set goals.

When you have goals for yourself, you have something you're working toward rather than just the general goal of trying to be a better dancer. So set small objectives, for instance improving your jumps, and a timeline in which you'd like to see progress. Then work out a plan of action for achieving that goal. In other words, what are you going to do to get there? Will you work with your teacher, practice outside the studio, video your jumps, or work out to improve your leg strength? Make sure you outline the steps you plan to take to achieve those goals.

Seek out a mentor.

Want to be the best dancer you can be? Then seek out advice, guidance and help from those who have already reached the pinnacle of their careers in the form of a mentor. Before you go out and find a mentor, perform some self-assessment first. In other words, what do you hope to gain from the relationship? What dance skills or abilities do you want to learn and develop? What are your ultimate career aspirations? Write these down and make sure you use them when you're considering mentors that would be right for you.

Ignore your inner critic.

When it comes to your dancing abilities, you need to be realistic. At the same time, it's important that you're not overly harsh or critical with yourself. When you are, you'll be more focused on what you're not doing or what you can't do then on what you should be doing to improve. Not only that, but when it comes to your confidence level, the inner critic never has a positive impact on it. Instead, be honest with yourself about the areas you have to work on and how you plan to improve. At the same time, be kind to yourself and don't ever use harsh words when you're evaluating your dance abilities.

Get healthy.

Beyond simply working on your dancing abilities, it's also important to be healthy in your life overall. That means eating well, getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, and working out. Don't skip meals and also make sure you always have nutritious snacks with you. In addition, strive for some balance in your life. While dance will always be front and center, it's important to make time for friends and family as well. Dance can be a big part of your life, it just shouldn't be your entire life.

Hang out with supportive people.

It's tough to achieve your dreams if you're around people who are always negative or who try to pressure you into doing things you don't want to do. That's why, instead, it's important to surround yourself with people who are positive and who will encourage your dance desires. Not only will it feel good to be supported, but it will have an impact on your mental health, as well, as you strive to reach your potential as a dancer.

Expect challenges.

Becoming a better dancer isn't going to be a walk in the park. Instead, there are going to be days where you feel like giving up on even the best dance shoes; days when you're tired, not focused and just want to take a break from it all. It takes a lot of hard work and correcting course in order to reach the elite levels of dance. So expect some challenges and roadblocks along the way. When you do, you'll have the mindset that they're simply roadblocks, something temporary to get over, not fixed barriers stopping you from achieving your goals.

Believe in yourself.

If you don't believe that you can become a better dancer and wow the crowds with your abilities, then you're not going to get there. The first step is believing in yourself and truly knowing in your heart that you can do it. While you might have a ton of work in front of you, you still know that if you keep at it, your dance dreams will come true.
