My Child’s Dance Teacher Makes Me Cry.

05/23/2021

Today was the third time this dance season that my child’s dance teacher has made me cry. The first two times I figured I was being overly emotional, but this time I felt compelled to share my experience. I want other dance families, or potential dance families, to hear this.

When I signed my daughter up for her first dance class, I had high hopes for her. I initially envisioned cute dance outfits and fun performances. Well, we got that...that, and a whole lot more.

Becoming a part of our dance program was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I’ve found out this is so much more than just dancing.

She has gained courage. I watched her take a deep breath and bravely walk into her first dance class. I watched her do the same when walking onto the stage at her very first solo competition. This year, I’ve watched her fail and then muster up the courage to try again and again. Because she was taught to do this, she succeeded. This is absolutely invaluable.

She has gained confidence. As I’ve watched her become physically stronger from all of the hours she has put in at the dance studio, I’ve also witnessed her self-assurance soar. I watched her and her teammates achieve amazing technique and strength. I can see that they know they are capable. Her dance teacher had a huge role in making that happen.

Finally, she has gained resilience. I’ve witnessed her understanding of, and most importantly, her willingness to overcome any challenge and grow from it. I watched from a distance as she attempted the same turn set over and over again. I couldn’t help but let the tears roll down my face. Rather than giving up, her teacher has taught her to keep fighting and push through setbacks and that is amazing. It can be hard to watch your child struggle, but I hope you have a dance teacher like I do, to advise you to just step back and let them grow. Because when challenges in their life occur, you won’t always be there. Knowing that they have developed the skills to handle anything that comes their way, is one of the greatest comforts of all.

I want this to reach anyone debating if they should sign their child up for dance...You should consider it! You’re not just investing in dance classes, you’re investing in the person they will become and that is priceless. If you’re lucky, you will get a dance teacher who will also make you cry.

Sincerely,

A Just For Kix Dance Mom
