Top Tips on Nailing an Audition

05/16/2018

Audition season. Those two little words strike both fear and exhilaration into the hearts of dancers all over the country. Whether you're auditioning for a company, or for a summer program, it's your chance to make an impression and win a coveted spot. But with so many talented dancers out there, how can you stand out? With these top tips from leading discount dancewear supplier, Just for Kix:

Be prepared.

Get a good night sleep and eat well in the days leading up to the audition, with a light meal about an hour before. Prior to leaving your house, make sure you have everything you need for the audition. Double check your dance bag for all the necessary dance supplies, including dance shoes, Band-Aids, extra hair pins, and a snack and water bottle. Also, take a look at the application to be sure you are following each requirement down to the tee. Is there a dress code? Is there an audition fee that requires you to bring payment? Check the list...and check it twice.

Get there early.

If you're rushed to get to your audition or running late, you're going to be stressed -- and unable to deliver your best performance. That's why it's important to give yourself ample time to get to an audition. That way, you can arrive a little early -- plan for at least 30 minutes or even a little more -- stretch, do some breathing exercises and mentally prepare yourself for what's ahead. You can also get the lay of the land ahead of time if you're not familiar with the venue. That said, you don't want to get there so early that you're stuck waiting around for a long period of time.

Dress neatly.

Some auditions have a strict dress code and others don't. Whatever the protocol is for your particular audition -- whether it's a simple black leotard or more colorful attire -- make sure you're dressed neatly. That means you're wearing a clean leotard, your tights don't have holes in them, and your hair is slicked and tied back. Don't wear any statement jewelry or bright nail polish that can distract from your performance. The last thing you want is to be remembered for wearing something inappropriate or for having a big run in your tights. Read this article for more tips on what not to wear to an audition.

Don't hide in the back.

If you're confident, know the material, and want to nail the audition, then stand proudly front and center. That doesn't mean being rude or pushy. It just means you want the opportunity to show the judges that you can learn the routine quickly and learn it well. They'll be on the lookout for those who are fast learners. Plus, it also shows them that you're a leader and not afraid of being in front. However, if you're struggling or don't have a full grasp on the choreography, then stand further back until you feel more confident.

Be mindful of your body language.

Don't sit down or lean up against the barre. Also, don't cross your arms, put your hands on your hips or tap your feet. The judges are trying to decide whether or not to they want to bring you on board and at an audition, everything counts. That also means no gum chewing or constantly adjusting your hair. This things communicate a level of insecurity to the judges. In addition, be careful of your facial expressions. Oftentimes, dancers are serious, and as a result, can sometimes look stressed or angry even when they're not. So try to keep a pleasant, neutral expression on your face.

Be polite.

From start to finish, be gracious and polite -- even if you aren't chosen. Always treat your fellow dancers and the judges with courtesy and respect. Smile at the judges and make plenty of eye contact too. Don't be the dancer that's complaining or pushy. Also, don't stand in front of other dancers, blocking them in the process. And remember to say "thank you" afterward whether you are selected or dismissed.

Move on quickly from mistakes.

If you make a mistake, don't freak out. You're human and it happens. Just don't throw a tantrum, or stop in your tracks and cause a pileup on the audition floor. Keep moving and work to regain composure. The faster you can forget your mistake -- or even make light of it -- the easier chance you'll have of moving on from it and staying strong and confident.

Don't be too hard on yourself.

Auditioning well is a skill that can be developed over time. So if one doesn't go well, don't be too hard on yourself. Instead, look at it as a learning experience for what you want to do better or different the next time around.

Enjoy yourself.

Remember, dancing is supposed to be fun! And while auditions are serious stuff, try to enjoy the process. After all, you love to dance and you want to channel that energy and passion into your performance. It could be the one thing that helps you get noticed in a sea of other dancers.
