Dance Career Options

05/16/2018

Many kids grow up with a love of dance, some of them so dedicated they made it their art.

But it's the kids that practice daily, the ones that love it so much, that want a career in dance. While some may go on to be professional dancers, some may explore other dance career options. Here are some of the top career options for those who have dedicated their lives to dancing.

Professional dancer. Dance can be very competitive, and only a handful may go on to find steady work as a professional dancer. Between practicing and auditioning, dancing can be a competitive gig. Luckily, there are multiple options for dancing professionally such as theater, musicals, or music videos.

Dance teacher. This is a popular choice, and for good reason. Once you've trained long enough in a certain style of dance, you have the experience and the knowledge to teach it to new students. Consider teaching in a local studio, a public school or a specialized dance school. Depending on where you want to teach, you may need additional training or certification.

Choreographer. Many dance teachers also do choreography for their students, but you could become a choreographer for a local theater or entertainment companies. You could also start your own choreography business. While having years of experience and a high school diploma is often sufficient enough to become a choreographer, you might want to consider earning a Bachelor's degree in dance or performing arts to further expand your credentials. Also, if you want to open your own business, taking some additional courses on business and administrative duties could really help a new choreography business get ahead.

Administrator or assistant. If the idea of administration sounds good but you don't want your own business, working in an administrative position for a dance company or a theater is a great option. With years of practice, any dancer should have enough knowledge of the inner workings of a successful dance company. Since you know the industry inside and out, having general knowledge of administrative duties like monitoring budgets, scheduling meetings and rehearsals, or organizing fundraisers is all you will need to transition into this less physically active, but still very involved dance career.

Yoga or Pilates teacher. Dancers are so familiar with their bodies, so for those who are interested in a more physical career such as teaching fitness classes, getting certified in either yoga or Pilates is a great option. There are different types of training for either type of exercise, and certification can range from 200 to 500 hours. Additionally, you might want to choose a certain type of yoga to specialize in, or choose between Pilates mat training or apparatus training. Each type requires different lessons and may require additional hours. Once certified, you may choose to teach at a gym, existing yoga or Pilates studio, or open your own studio.

Dance videographer. For dancers who have spent so much time in front of a camera, some may want to transiting into a career behind the camera. Doing videography or photography for dance studios or other media outlets is a great career choice. With so much first-hand experience in the world of dance, dancers turned videographers pay attention to minute movements and facial expressions that other people might miss.

Costume designer. For dancers with a love of dancewear, putting together costumes for shows or designing new dancewear is a natural career choice. With knowledge in what feels good to move in and years of first-hand experience on what looks good on stage, you have the right foundation for creating dancewear or accessories.

Online marketer or social media manager for a dance company. All businesses, even local dance companies, need to have an online presence. If marketing is something you are interested in, working in the marketing or public relations department for a local dance company is another dance career option. Decide on what your field of expertise will be, such as PR, social media marketing or even website design. For most of these career options, a marketing or graphic design degree will be necessary.

Physical therapist. Like a fitness instructor, a physical therapist has to have a close relationship with their own body and understand the way the body works. If medicine is an interest of yours, becoming a physical therapist or even a dance medicine specialist is a great career option after you have spent years learning about dance. While anyone can study the body, the first-hand experience you have can greatly help you in your practice.

For the many kids that grow up loving dance, finding a career in dance can only further the love and dedication they have. From professional dancer to physical therapist, there are many dance career options to explore that can allow a dancer to use their training and their skills.
